Sri Lanka has maintained an impressive economic growth in recent years, and the road network has played a key role in uplifting the socio-economic growth of the country. After the construction of the three expressways, the adjoining areas of the expressways has seen high rate of development and these expressways have become the preferred route of transport.
The Proposed Ruwanpura Expressway from Kahathuduwa to Pelmadulla via Ratnapura is connecting Western Province with Sabaragmauwa Province. First phase of the Expressway from Kahathuduwa to Ingiriya will be 24.3km long. The first phase will be divided into four packages as follows;
1. Package 1 – Ruwanpura Expressway (0+000 to 7+300 km) -7.3 km
2. Package 2 - Ruwanpura Expressway (7+300 to 13+800 km) -6.5km
3. Package 3 - Ruwanpura Expressway (13+800 to 20+300 km) - 6.5km
4. Package 4 – Ruwanpura Expressway (20+300 to 24+300 km) – 4km
Phase 1 of the Ruwanpura Expressway commences from the 19+600 km of the Colombo – Horana Road (B084) and proceeds upto Ingiriya via Horana. The design speed of this phase will be 110km/h and it will be a four lane two-way Expressway. This section comprises of two interchanges which are at Horana and Ingiriya.
